STEVE DAY: DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

My interest is in organised chaos. That is how I perceive this world into which we are committed to ensuring that people with learning disabilities are fully integrated.

Before moving to Brandon Trust I had an extensive management career in Social Services; later acting as a Commissioner for new services.  I have experience of leading and developing progressive Learning & Development programmes specific to the learning disbilities agenda.  In 2008 I visited Mozambique in order to set in motion Brandon's involvement in a small-scale support programme for people with learning disabilities in Beira. My current role is all about how Brandon Trust communicates its message both externally and internally; it also includes facilitation of the Unique Futures Five Year Strategy, making a contribution to the Government's Human Rights report - "A Life Like Any Other?", as well as new project development and coordinating the involvemnt of the people we support as advisors to managemnt.

I care passionately about people with learning disabilities having genuine opportunities within the community. The 'community' is not an all embracing, fun loving environment; the PostModern landscape is tough territory for many social groups with lots of conflicting dynamics. I believe the people we support have an important role to play in making clear contributions to the values and culture of our society. In relation to disability, people with learning disabilities are experts; my role is expanding that expertise into the wider social agenda. In an editorial published in the British Journal of Learning Disabilities, Professor Gordon Grant of Sheffield Hallam University commented on a recent article by myself:  "Steve Day offers a postmodern analysis of change and transformation in learning disability services.  Using language rich in metaphors he suggests that the meanings attached to success, citizenship and inclusion are much more messy than at first seems to be the case."

I have significant consultancy facilitation and publishing experience as well as skills in using music, theatre and film to communicate, discuss and translate issues. I consult beyond the boundaries.
