Arts and Media Course

This Edexcel BTEC course in skills for working life is run from the computer training suite in Pucklechurch.

The six students got to work on a range of skills including 2D and 3D creative skills, they had to use a range of materials including:



  • Dry media: eg drawing materials such as pencils, pens, charcoal, chalks, crayons,
    different papers, cards, fabrics, yarns, wax, found and scrap materials etc.
  • Wet media: eg paints such as poster, watercolour, acrylic, gouache, ink, print and fabric
    dyes, glass paint, PVA, adhesives etc.
  • Non resistant materials: eg usually soft and easy to work with such as papers, thin card,
    clay, plaster, papier mache or pulp, foam, textiles materials.
  • Resistant materials: eg usually difficult to shape such as thick card, set plaster, plastics,
    wood, metal.

Introduction to Computers

In this unit the students have had the opportunity to find out what each part of a computer does and
how to produce documents, other skills include:

  • Saying what the parts of a computer do.
  • Connect parts of the computer together.
  • Start the computer and open a software program.
  • Arrange the desktop to suit their needs.
  • Use a printer.
  • Use a scanner (or other appropriate peripheral).
  • Close down a software program and switch off the computer.
  • Describe different operating systems.

They are now just starting out on Developing Media Skills
In this unit the students will learn more about different types of media. They will choose a topic to present using one type of media best suited to the topic, and use the media to present the topic. The students will also demonstrate skills in improving the quality of their work.
