Being Local

At Brandon Trust being local is important to us. Bristol is where we started as a charity over 15 years ago and our Bristol Team is really committed to what goes on in the area. Over the years we have developed the way we do things in the city; some of our most innovative work has its roots in projects that began in Bristol. Susannah's Story, set out below, is one of a number of examples we could give of individuals who are creating independent lives for themselves with support from Brandon Trust. Contact us if you feel we might be able to help you.

Susannah's Story

Susannah moved to Bristol in March 2008, after a temporary stay in another house she move to a Brandon Trust registered care home at the start of April that year. She uses a number of different Brandon services to support her with employment, increasing her independence and making a life for herself in the community. Here in her own words Susannah describes the impact of those services on her:

"My name is Susannah Williams. I've lived at Priory Road for about a year. If it weren't for the staff at Priory Road I wouldn't have achieved as much as I have. Also the other people I live with have helped me a lot in the last year to feel more settled.

Suzannah and Steve

"I am engaged to Steve Williams. We got engaged on the day before Valentines Day. We are both really happy and it was even better because it was a surprise for me! The Brandon team helped Steve to organise a romantic evening with candles and music; it was kept a secret from me. I wasn't even allowed out of my bedroom until Steve came and got me for my surprise! I was grateful for everybody's help.

Engagement Rings

"I think that my key worker has been absolutely fantastic. He's helped me become more independent, confident and re-build my family relationships.

"I had my best Christmas ever last year at Priory Road. It's the little things that staff and residents do that are important. A phone call on my birthday, help when I moved in, support with reading and using the computer. In the last year I have learnt to use the bus on my own. I have been supported to cut back on my spending. I have taken part in swimming competitions and hope to go to the Special Olympics this year. Also staff know how to calm me down when I get upset.

"I went on holiday last year to Cornwall. I loved it! I'm going away again this summer and I'm really excited!

"The team at Priory Road advise me every day; but it is always my choice. This is the best house I've been in, it feels like home."
