Remember, everyone can vote

Beth RichardsResearch shows that people with learning disabilities don't vote as much. I vote sometimes and so do my friends with a learning disability but we find it hard to understand.

It can be difficult to make a choice about who to vote for because the words and sentences in the manifestos are complicated to understand or use lots of jargon.

When registering to vote, it's difficult to know what to do, how to do it, or where to go. Or the information might be in an inaccessible format.

Just because someone has a learning disability, they might be told they can't vote, but they can.

They might need support to go to the polling station but their support staff might be busy. Or the polling station may have moved so it could be confusing where to go.

It makes me feel angry and sad because people with learning disabilities should be included so they know what's going on in the world.

It's important that people with learning disabilities vote so they can have their say and be involved.

To make it easier for people with learning disabilities to vote, you can:

  • use big font
  • have easier words/sentences
  • shorter sentences
  • explain what words mean
  • use pictures
  • and make sure people have support if they need it

Remember, everyone can vote. Don't let people say you can't!
