Supporting people with learning disabilities into work
Friday 27 May 2016
Brandon Trust is involved in a new Gloucestershire venture to help people with learning disabilities seeking employment opportunities.
The Dursley Forwards Employment Group is a collaboration between Brandon and Gloucestershire County Council. They meet every Wednesday, from 11am-1pm, at Cam’s GL11 centre computer suite.
Brandon Trust's Employment Project Leader and Inclusion Coordinator Samantha Dee runs the group and said: "Our aim is to reach out to local employers seeking local employees. There is an untapped pool of talent amongst disabled people, and we want local businesses to see they could find an absolutely invaluable employee.
"Those in the group are actively looking for work, so during the sessions we work on getting 'work ready' with communication, interview, and confidence skills. Dursley no longer has a job centre, so this is a very positive step."
Cllr Kathy Williams, cabinet member for long-term care, said: "Finding employment can be difficult, and at times it is hard to know where to begin.
"The Dursley Forwards Employment Group is a great way to grow the confidence of people with learning disabilities that are looking to enter employment and find a job in the local area."
