Spooktacular fun at Halloween sensory disco

People we support recently got together for a Halloween sensory disco in Par, Cornwall.

Team leaders Karen and Abi set up the yearly event for people with learning disabilities and autism. It’s gone from strength to strength and, as Abi explains, this year they had their best turn out yet:

"It was a brilliant evening with lots of people attending with support staff. We had a cracking Halloween-themed disco with music and food, and of course lots of sensory stimulus like lights, bubbles, sound tubes, and a parachute game."

Evenings like this are just one example of the many events and activities that Karen, Abi, and their colleagues plan throughout the year that are autism-friendly. As Karen tells us, for many people it’s events like this that act as a stepping stone into other social activities and the wider community:

"They provide a safe, sensory, and fun space and an opportunity to spend time with other people, which often turns into friendships. For some people we support, these kinds of events start as one of the only activities outside of their home that they might want to attend. One gentleman, for example, has been to a few of these discos now, and it's helped him and staff supporting him to engage in other activities with other people – the progress it's helped him and others to achieve has been amazing."

A big well done to Karen, Abi, and everyone else that helped put the event together, looks like it was a scarily fun evening witch everyone enjoyed! Coming up next for the team are Christmas events in December – a sensory day in Bodmin and a disco in Par.
