Getting spicy in Cornwall

Cooking CurryMy day job at Brandon Trust is Business Intelligence Analyst within the IS department, so I jumped at the chance to spend a day away from the computer with people we support at Padstow Foyer in Cornwall.

I did this as part of the charity's work scheme 'A Different Day', and chose to organise a curry night for the supported living residents. Thanks to Jane White for the idea!

At Padstow Foyer we support five young, talented, and friendly people as they grow their independence.

After arriving, I started with a walking tour of Padstow Harbour with David, who took some great photos in the sunshine, perhaps a future profession for him? He pointed out his favourite places, the most important being the famous Clotted Cream Ice Cream Parlour and, yes, it was yummy.

As we chatted, David told me he can't wait to get a job. When I asked him if he likes it in Padstow Foyer, he said: "Yes, but I wish I wasn't the youngest of all".

For our curry night, the generous Nathan kindly agreed to share his big kitchen and cutlery for me to cook curry for all. The menu included bread bhaji, rajma curry, naan bread, egg fried rice, raita, and sheera (dessert).

I'd done my food preparation so had plenty of time to gather more information about the service and daily life from the lovely support worker Emma, and team leader Eleanor.

We all chipped in for the ingredients and Eleanor had kindly done the shopping in advance. Such amazing staff we have there. Great work!

I started cooking as everyone was on their way home from work, tired and hungry. Resident Yaz arrived later as she did extra hours at a Padstow café where she works because the glorious weather brought more visitors. Yaz and I connected straight away and she helped me with the cooking. She had tried cucumber and tomato raita before and was glad to see how easy it is to make.

Dinner TimeNathan, Alex, and Tim returned perfectly on time. They'd all had a very busy day at work and were looking forward to their dinner. Luckily they all like curry.

Nathan had cleaned 10 caravans that day, but was still smiling. We had dinner together and I finally got the chance to get to know everyone better as we chatted.

Alex was over the moon to have curry for dinner. He said he eats a lot of curry but this one was the best of all. Yaz enjoyed everything, especially sweet sheera.

We thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company and almost all the food disappeared in no time. David wasn’t feeling very well so we saved some food for him to enjoy next day.

After such an amazing day, I didn’t want to come home, but at least I had a train ride to look forward to. I love trains! The other thing I like is gifts, so it was very touching to receive gifts on top of the welcome I received at Padstow Foyer that day.

A gorgeous location with beautiful memories. What a perfect day and a humbling experience. I'm already looking forward to my next Different Day! Thank you to everyone who made it happen. I think the Padstow guys are now looking forward to seeing what I do in Bristol.
