Inspiring future nurses

My name is Tess and I'm a student at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, where I'm doing a degree in Learning Disability Nursing. Last year, as part of my course, I did a 10-week placement at the Wraxall Road Nursing Home.

Since working at Wraxall Road, my self-esteem and confidence as a nurse have grown – and that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of everyone there. All of the nursing staff, including the manager Alice, were understanding, reassuring and patient with me whenever I asked for support or advice.

Role models

I also saw the passion that goes into their roles. When I qualify I want to be just like the nurses at Wraxall Road because they are truly inspirational. They care for everyone to a high standard and work really hard to ensure that everything is done in the best interests of the people living there.

The staff give everyone the opportunity to make choices for themselves, even if they are unable to communicate verbally – for example by showing them different outfits and waiting patiently for a response through head movements or the slight raising of arms. They know the people living there really well and I have genuinely never worked in a home that I’ve loved so much.

I've now chosen to join Brandon’s bank team and pick up shifts at Wraxall Road as I don’t want to leave! It’s like a family home and doesn’t feel institutional like some of the other places I've been to. I’m so grateful to all the staff for such a lovely placement and would like to say a big thank you to them.
