Hi. My name’s Adam and I’m a support worker. My role extends far beyond providing day-to-day care; it is about empowering people with disabilities to lead full, happy, and enriched lives. This often involves stepping into new and exciting experiences together, creating unforgettable memories.
Recently, I had the privilege of supporting Lewis, a young man with Down’s syndrome, to go to the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall. This large-scale event, with a capacity of 58,000, was more than just a music festival for Lewis – it was a significant milestone in his journey toward greater independence and happiness.
Building anticipation and confidence
Attending a major event like Boardmasters is a big occasion for anyone, and for Lewis, it was no exception. Whilst Lewis does not experience sensory challenges – he loves loud music and thrives in vibrant environments – there were still important preparations to be made. The journey began months before the festival, with Lewis’ whole support team working together to ensure he would have the best experience.
We began by talking with Lewis about the festival, helping him understand what to expect. Although Lewis likes all music, we discovered there were artists he was eager to see. These discussions were crucial for building his anticipation and confidence.
Lewis’ staff team played a vital role in helping him to prepare. We worked closely with him, focussing on aspects such as navigating large crowds, managing Lewis’ schedule during the event, and planning for any potential challenges that might arise. With our support, Lewis was not only ready for the festival but eager to dive into the experience headfirst.
Captivated by the atmosphere
When the first day of the festival arrived, I had the honour of accompanying Lewis. As we approached Boardmasters, the excitement was palpable. The festival’s vibrant atmosphere, with its music, colours, and energy was exactly what Lewis loved, and it was incredible to see him embrace it.
Our day began with Tom Odell’s afternoon performance. His emotive set provided a beautiful introduction to the day. Lewis swayed gently to the songs, clearly moved by the music. It really set a positive tone for the day.
We then moved on to see Gok Wan’s DJ set. Lewis was in his element enjoying the rhythm of the infectious beats. The transition from Tom Odell’s relaxed vibe to Gok Wan’s energetic set was seamless, and it kept Lewis engaged and excited. The highlight of the day arrived with Chase & Status. Lewis danced and cheered along with the crowd as the powerful beats and vibrant visuals made the energy electric. Lewis was completely captivated.
On Saturday, Nikki supported Lewis. They went to the DB90 area which is known for drum and bass, and this was the perfect spot for Lewis to experience the high energy, immersive environment. The DB90 area is an open-air setting which allows for an expansive sound experience. Nikki stayed close, ensuring that Lewis felt comfortable and supported as he enjoyed the day. It was a day filled with music, movement, and joy which truly resonated with him.
Soaking up every moment
The final day of the festival was marked by the most anticipated performance – Stormzy. Timmy supported Lewis on the last day, and the excitement was at an all-time high. Timmy ensured that Lewis was right in the middle of the action, soaking up every moment.
Timmy’s energetic and enthusiastic approach matched Lewis’ excitement, making the experience even more enjoyable. The crowd was large and the energy was intense, but Timmy’s presence enabled Lewis to have the confidence to fully engage with the performance. It was the perfect way to close out the weekend, leaving Lewis buzzing with excitement.
Overcoming challenges
Whilst the weekend was filled with joy and excitement, it was not without its challenges. Festivals can be overwhelming, and while Lewis loves loud music and lively environments, managing such a dynamic setting still required careful attention.
One of the challenges we faced was helping Lewis navigate the large crowds whilst ensuring he remained comfortable and confident. The preparation and teamwork during the months prior to the festival, was crucial in overcoming challenges.
When one of us noticed Lewis needed a break or some space, we quickly found quieter spots where he could relax before diving back into the festival atmosphere.
Communication was key throughout the weekend. By regularly checking in with Lewis and each other, we could make real-time adjustments to our plans, ensuring that Lewis remained happy and content throughout the festival.
Reflecting on a tremendous experience
As the festival ended and we reflected on the weekend, it was clear that the experience had been a tremendous success. Supporting Lewis at Boardmasters was about more than just ensuring his safety – it was about enabling him to fully immerse himself in an experience that brought him joy.
For those considering a career in support work, this experience is a powerful reminder of the impact we have. Our role goes beyond daily care – it is about opening doors to new experiences, fostering independence, and helping people like Lewis live their lives to the full. The smiles, the laughter, and the shared moments of joy throughout the weekend are a testament to the importance and value of our work.
Make a profound difference
To fellow support workers and those contemplating working in the care sector, I want to emphasise the profound difference you can make. Whether it is supporting someone at a significant event like a festival or helping them navigate daily routines, the work we do is crucial in empowering individuals to live full and enriched lives.
The experience at Boardmasters, from the initial planning stages to the final performance, was a powerful reminder of why I chose this career. If you are enthusiastic about making a real difference in someone’s life, support work offers a unique and deeply fulfilling opportunity.
The power to transform lives
Supporting Lewis at the Boardmasters Festival highlighted the power of teamwork, preparation, and the dedication of support workers. It is a role that requires patience, adaptability, and compassion, but the rewards – both for the individuals we support and for ourselves – are immeasurable.
Whether you are an experienced support worker or considering joining this field, know that your work has the power to transform lives, one experience at a time.
