Lynn is one of Brandon’s longest-serving volunteers. As we celebrate 10 years of Brandon charity shops, Lynn shares her thoughts about her time as a shop volunteer.

Hi. I’m Lynn. I have been part of the Brandon family almost from the beginning when the first shop was opened on Cotham Hill.

It was a charity close to my heart as my eldest granddaughter who is 10 years-old, has a diagnosis of non-verbal autism and attends a special school.

Sense of purpose

Volunteering for Brandon gives me a sense of purpose – in that I am helping to raise funds for other families and children/adults, just like her. She lives in Gloucestershire and currently, there is not a similar charity nearby for her.

I like the fact that goods made by the young adults Brandon supports are for sale in the shop, enabling them to have a sense of belonging and fulfilment in their lives.

I also enjoy the company of the myriad of people that I meet, and as we’re so close to the university, it is great that so many young people love our shop. Having been in education all my life, it is pleasing to see that the people who come in are always very complimentary about the Brandon shop, and many are interested in finding out more about the charity.

Sense of wellbeing

I have worked alongside many different managers during my time at the shop, all of whom have been very supportive and great to work with. I really feel that I am a valued member of the team.

I have been very privileged in my life, and I get a great sense of wellbeing from being able to give something back. I still see every day as a learning day.

Part of the family

I love working with the people we support, and we have a very good camaraderie. I also learn from them. When I could not read some small print recently, one of them suggested taking a photo on my phone and then zooming in. And voila!

I really do feel part of a wider family and both my current managers are very understanding of some recent personal issues that have affected my family and they have been incredibly supportive.

I feel I am very valued and I still have something to offer at my grand old age!
