Sheila, who we support in the beautiful county of Cornwall, is the proud runner up of a community art competition organised by our fundraising partner, Kier Construction.

The competition was designed to highlight the unique beauty and charm of the region, with the compelling theme centred around artistic designs reflecting ‘what you love about Cornwall’.

With a passion for her village of Roche, Sheila poured her heart and soul into her work, creating a stunning depiction of her favourite local scene. To her surprise and delight, her artwork was awarded second place!

Artwork display at West Cornwall Hospital

In recognition of her talent and to Sheila’s delight, her artwork will be displayed on the hoardings surrounding the construction site at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance. The display will not only serve as a vibrant representation of the area, but will also bring a touch of local artistry to the ongoing development, for residents and visitors to enjoy during the construction work.

Sheila was invited to the hospital to receive her prize – which included a hi-vis jacket – and the experience was made even more special by the support of her dedicated support worker, who shared how meaningful and uplifting the experience has been for Sheila.

‘Treated like a VIP’

Her support worker told us that Sheila felt like she was ‘treated like a VIP’ throughout the event, highlighting the care and attention Sheila received. In a heartwarming twist that added an extra layer of joy to the day, Sheila was unexpectedly presented with a certificate of recognition by the Mayor of Penzance – a very proud moment that filled her with a sense of accomplishment and made the occasion even more memorable.

Sheila is now looking forward to seeing her artwork on the hoardings on a site visit on 30 October – during which she will be proudly wearing her hi-vis jacket.

Beyond the thrill of the competition and the accolades she received, Sheila is overjoyed that her artwork has received a positive reaction from the community. Following the event, she was approached with an exciting request. With her permission, her design will be used to create postcards, with the sale proceeds going towards the local hospital that Kier Construction is currently working to extend.

Sheila was thrilled and without hesitation, she agreed. It brings Sheila immense pride to know that her art will not only be displayed in a public space but will also play a part in supporting a worthy cause that directly benefits her community.

Sheila’s enthusiasm for her artistic endeavours and her commitment to giving back to the community shines brightly.
