As Chief Executive of Brandon Trust, it’s my privilege to witness the profound impact our work has on individuals, families, and communities every single day. The impact we want to make isn’t just a set of organisational objectives – it’s a living testament to our belief in the potential of every person we support.
At Brandon, our mission is clear: to support people with learning disabilities and autistic people to live the lives they choose. We know that true inclusion isn’t just about where someone lives, it’s about the life they want to live.
What matters to me
A highly respected colleague of mine, an impressive mover, shaker, and disrupter in social care, challenged me recently about the notion of what we mean by outcomes in organisations such as ours. It’s an important challenge.
At Brandon, our ‘Outcomes Statement’ is rooted in our unwavering commitment to person-centred support. We are not seeking to determine what outcomes will look like for the people we support. Rather, we celebrate diversity and individuality, recognising that every person’s journey is unique. Success, for us, means enabling people to shape their own futures – making choices that matter to them, big or small.
I have never developed a set of outcomes for my own life, but I do have things that I actively want to realise or make happen. This month we celebrated my son’s graduation. It was important to me to book the time off, to get a new frock to wear, to enjoy a meal out, and to make sure we got some decent photographs.
Meaningful opportunities
We believe everyone should have access to meaningful opportunities – whether that’s finding fulfilling work, building new friendships, developing life skills, celebrating milestones, or exploring interests and new experiences. Our teams work tirelessly to create pathways to employment, social connection, and personal achievement. I believe for many of us at Brandon, our ‘moments of joy’ are when we hear people sharing their stories of achievement, realising goals or milestones that even in the recent past might have felt out of reach for them.
Wellbeing for all
Wellbeing is at the heart of what we do. We prioritise physical and emotional health, purpose and meaning, tailoring our support around the ambitions and needs of every individual. Through collaboration with families, loved ones, and communities, we ensure that each person can shape their own life, week by week, year on year.
What do we mean by outcomes?
At Brandon, our outcome-orientated approach is fundamentally about the difference we want to make in enabling people to live what makes a good life for them. We define outcomes as the meaningful changes that matter most to each individual we support – whether that’s building confidence, gaining independence, improving wellbeing, or connecting with their community. Every support plan is co-produced and mapped to Care Act criteria and “I statements”, ensuring that what we do is not only person-centred but also purposeful. It’s about real choice, real control, and real impact – delivered through a whole-life approach that supports people to thrive at every stage.
Together, we can!
Our work is a collective effort. By working in partnership, sharing expertise, and championing best practice, we can make a difference together. The stories and successes of those we support are at the heart of everything we do and remind us daily why our mission matters.
I am proud of the progress we continue to make and excited about the future we are building together. The Brandon Trust Outcomes Statement is more than words on a page; it’s a call to action and a promise to every person we serve.
Thank you to all those who are standing with us as we strive for a world where people with all abilities truly belong and everyone can live life to the full.
