About the role of a Brandon trustee
You'll have a clear commitment to our mission and to upholding and enhancing the rights of people with learning disabilities. You'll understand the difference between the Executive's responsibility for management, and the Board's governance role.
The collective Board duties are varied. They include ensuring that Brandon has a vision for delivering positive outcomes for its beneficiaries as part of its overall plan. The Board ensures Brandon has the funds and resources to deliver such outcomes, comply with rules, regulations and the law, behave responsibly, assess risks, and protect its assets.
It's a varied role and includes scrutinising and endorsing strategic plans, monitoring controls, processes and safeguards, and providing advice and support to the Board and management team. You may also, if available, support Brandon at events and sit on appropriate sub-committee(s).
Most importantly, you'll be part of a professional and passionate team working to make a significant difference to the daily lives of people with complex personal challenges whom Brandon supports.
You'll need to commit to the equivalent of approximately 10 days a year for meetings in Bristol in addition to occasional travel to our areas across the south of England, all of which are diarised well in advance. We will reimburse reasonable expenses. Typically, your time will be split as follows:
- Six to eight Board meetings per year; each a half day
- Two to four sub-committees per year; membership encouraged after induction period
- Three visits or more per year to service locations to understand our work in practice
- Ad hoc event support as you're able
- During the initial induction programme there will be some additional time to visit staff and services
You'll also need to read Board papers, which can be managed flexibly in your own time.
Detailed knowledge of the social care sector and governance aren't necessary; it's your own experience which will enable you to play an active role in leading Brandon during a challenging period for the social care sector.
We are particularly interested in people with senior/board-level experience in the following areas:
- Operational management/efficiency
- Mergers and acquisitions
- Working/living with individuals learning disabilities or individuals with complex needs
An excellent strategic thinker and financially astute, you'll be committed to improving our local communities and enhancing people's lives. Well organised, you're able to plan for Board meetings and able to read reports ahead of meetings and prepare questions. With a collegiate approach, you bring personal experience, knowledge and skills to bear on discussions, and can challenge in a structured manner and be sympathetic to multiple points of view.
All trustees are subject to statutory and regulatory checks including an enhanced DBS check.
