Newquay skate community respond to appeal

We would like to say a massive thank you to the skate community in Newquay for their overwhelming response to an appeal for skate kit from our Cornwall team. The skaters pulled together to support and enable George to really enjoy and advance in his new hobby.

Supporting a new hobby

Brandon support worker, Richard, and team leader, Rory, explained how it all came about.

Rory told us: "We are always looking for ways to find opportunities for the people we support to meet people in the local community, try new things, and above all, have fun. The last 18 months have been hard on all of us, but especially hard for people with a learning disability or autism.

"We noticed that George progressed from a scooter that he had from a child onto a skateboard."

Amazing response

Once it was clear that George’s newfound hobby was a big hit, the team decided to see if they could source him a lighter, better-quality board and some other bits of essential kit. So, in August, Richard and Rory, put out an appeal on social media.

The Newquay skate scene responded in an amazing way, and George now has a top-end skating set up donated by skaters all over the county.

Not only that, every time George heads out to the skate park, be it just to watch or try out his new board, he gets a warm welcome.

Skate park NewquayRory told us: "Everyone is so kind and welcoming to George. They cheer him on and take the time to stop and give an elbow or distanced high-five. Teenagers and skaters can sometimes get a bad rap, but everyone has been awesome to George which builds his confidence and communication skills."

The team would like to thank everyone who has helped George - not only for the kind and generous offers of skating equipment, but also for the wonderful welcome he gets when he ventures out to the skate park.
